A femme-presenting young man returns home for his mother’s funeral and is forced to navigate the violence and gender expectations that have shaped his fractured relationship with his father and his place in the community.
Obi Is a Boy follows Obi, who is called back to his family home in Nigeria after the sudden death of his mother. Identifying as gender non-conforming and having built a life away from home to escape restrictive cultural and familial pressures, Obi faces an uneasy reunion with his widowed father, with whom he shares a deep estrangement. Dialogue in the film is sparse; instead, the story relies on silence and subtle expression to show the emotional tension between father and child. Gradually, Obi’s internal journey toward self-acceptance becomes visible as he performs a symbolic and tender act of self-affirmation — dressing in his late mother’s garments — before leaving again. In this silent gesture, Obi refuses to be erased or constrained, choosing to live authentically in spite of rejection.
