My Father’s Shadow follows Folarin, a father who has been largely absent from his sons’ lives, as he unexpectedly brings his two young boys — Aki and Remi — from their rural home into the sprawling city of Lagos. Set against the backdrop of the politically charged 1993 Nigerian presidential election, the story unfolds over the course of a single day as they embark on a journey to collect Folarin’s overdue wages, navigating crowded buses, the urban landscape, and the looming unrest surrounding the country’s fraught move toward democracy. Along the way, the boys witness both the vibrancy and volatility of city life while gradually learning more about their father’s struggles, motivations, and quiet devotion. Through intimate conversations and shared experiences, they gain insight into his sacrifices and the emotional distance between them, questioning how love, absence, duty, and hope intersect in their family’s story.
