Set against the charged backdrop of early 20th-century colonial Nigeria, Eleko (Oba Esugbayi) chronicles the defiant reign of the Oba of Lagos as he confronts British imperial authority at a pivotal moment in the nation’s political awakening. When the Oba refuses to publicly denounce nationalist leader Herbert Macaulay, his stance ignites what would become known as the Eleko Affair, a dramatic clash between colonial power and indigenous sovereignty. As tensions rise over policies like the controversial water tax and symbols of authority such as the Oba’s Staff of Office, Lagos becomes a battleground of law, loyalty, and resistance. The crisis culminates in the Oba’s deposition in 1925 and his exile to Oyo — a move intended to silence both a king and a movement.
