Set in 16th-century Zazzau (modern-day Zaria, Nigeria), the story follows a willful young princess named Amina. From a young age, Amina declares her desire to train with weapons and become a soldier, defying societal norms that forbid women from joining the army or sitting on the throne. Guided by destiny and a local priestess, Amina trains hard in combat and military strategy. She must navigate political plots by treacherous usurpers, palace betrayals, and deadly gladiatorial games involving rival Igala forces. Ultimately, Amina uses her tactical military prowess and leadership skills to defend and reclaim her family's kingdom, paving the way for her historic rise as a powerful female monarch.
